The Defib The health services in our Island leaves a lot t be desired. Hospitals cannot cope with the numbers requiring in hospital treatment, it is almost impossible to get seen by a GP, most areas are very lucky if they can get an Ambulance within 30 minutes, it can take months to get an appointment to see a consultant, it can then take more months to get treatment, and the people of Monaghan, especially North Monaghan have to travel miles to get to a hospital but little is being done to improve the situation. For a time people, who could afford it, were changing to Insurance to get an earlier appointment but now only the rich can afford to pay the cost. Experts keep telling us that people are dying needlessly when they dont arrive at hospital in time or when they have to wait and wait to be seen by a doctor. Do any of those on whom we rely to provide us with a proper health service doing anything to help us? My answer is NO. Are they doing anything positive to get nurses and doctors stay in Ireland and work in our hospitals. My answer is again NO. What on earth are those responsible for the delivery of a Childrens Hospital doing when a building which started costing €470m is now heading for 3billion? What can we do to change things for the better? Would using your vote at the coming elections change anything???? Meanwhile efforts are being made to train ordinary people to be able to provide assistance to a patient until the ambulance might arrive. How to administer cardiac assistance using the Defib is one of the methods for the ordinary person to help a heart attack patient but training is required. In this area of North Monaghan, and I can only speak of this area, there is plenty of work being done to increase the number of people capable of administering cardiac assistance using the Defib and there are plenty of opportunities for people to train in the use of the Defib. You never know when you could be called upon for help and you never know when you or a family member might need Defib assistance from someone else. In order to increase the number of Defibs in the area and to encourage people to attend for training a walk/run event was organised recently at Emy Lake to raise funds and this was well attended but more could have been and should have been there.
