An event which now seems to have established itself as an Annual is the McAree Engineering
GAA Golf Classic in Rossmore Golf Club. The 2018 edition was held on Friday and Saturday,
May 18th/19th, and the weather was excellent and the turn-out magnificent. The Course
was in immaculate condition and everything was there for perfect golf but even though
that was the ultimate aim the social interaction and fun was also very important.
Everyone could avail of a tasty Burger at the half way point, courtesy of Gerry's
Prepared Vegetables, and there was a full dinner awaiting them in the Clubhouse after
the 18th. On Saturday night in the Clubhouse there was a great social occasion and
plenty of chat as it was the day before the Monaghan V Tyrone game. There to discuss
the game and football in general, with Alan Gunn as presenter, were Tony Donnelly,
Tyrone; Charlie Redmond, Dublin; and Monaghan's Paul Finlay. Others from the floor
were involved in the discussion and these included Dave Synott, Mick Deegan and Dave
Brady from Dublin and Eugene Sherry, Nudie Hughes from Monaghan and John Lynch for
Tyrone. By the end of the discussion no one was willing to give a definite prediction
though Monaghan speakers naturally gave their county the nod and the Tyrone boys
were quietly confident. The Chairman of the New York Golf Committee, Anthony McKenna,
thanked all for their support and he had no doubt as to who the winner next day would
be - Monaghan of course. Brendan Casey and Michael O. McMahon spoke on behalf of
the Monaghan GAA, Captain James Murphy and Pat McMorrow on behalf of Rossmore and
Peter Richardson on behalf of McAree Engineering. John and Vincent McAree presented
the prizes. Raymond and Ian Treanor presented the Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive
prizes as sponsors of same. The winner of the Ladies was a team led by Bernie McCague.
The Mens was won by Gerry Comiskey's team followed by Gerard Gilsenan's team and
in 3rd place was Jim Fanning's team. Well done to all the winners and they all received
great prizes sponsored by McAree Engineering.
It was Kinita's special Birthday and she celebrated in style by helping her team
to win but then she could not be there for the presentations as the family were having
a party in her honour.
