Charles McCarthy, together with his wife Mary and twelve other family members, paid
a visit to Carrickroe last week, and we met up with him in the home of Kitty McKenna.
There was a big gathering there to celebrate the visit as it was a very important
one. Charles's mother was Agnes McKenna, who emigrated from the homestead in Deravoy
to America when she was 15/16 years of age. In the USA she married a Kerry man and
they reared their family in the Bronx. Charles was one of the family. However now
retired as a New York Fireman he decided to pay a visit to the home from which his
mother departed all those years ago. It was a very emotional journey and more so
when he stood where the kitchen used be. He was delighted he made the journey and
he and his family received a wonderful reception from so many of his relatives. To
mark the occasion he planted a tree in the garden beside the house. We hope he had
a very enjoyable stay and that he will call again soon.
