Allianz Hurling League V Donegal.

While Monaghan man Darren Hughes was leading his Ulster Colleagues to victory over Munster in the Provincial Football final in Armagh, and while other Monaghan men stood waiting in the wings to play their part in that same victory, the hurlers of the county were showing their skills in Clones and in the process they were getting the upper hand over their opponents Donegal. They wanted to get their campaign in Div 3A off to a good start and manager Mattie Lennon selected a proven formula of: Ronan McAteer; Paul Murphy, Jim McHugh, Mark Treanor; Paul Meegan (0-1), Peter Treanor (0-1), Seamus Loftus; Gary Boyd (Capt 0-1), Trevor Hilliard; Martin Murphy (0-2), Stephen Lambe (0-1), Mickey McHugh (0-8f); Michael Lennon, Sean Leonard (1-2), Brian McGuigan.
Subs: Noel Morgan (0-2) for McGuigan, Aonghus Mac Suibhne for Lennon.
Monaghan began with a very stiff performance and were slow to get into the game. Donegal looked the much better and more skilful with 15 minutes having passed before Monaghan got on the scoreboard. However when Mickey McHugh slotted a few over the bar from frees it seemed to give the rest of the team confidence and the game turned around with Monaghan taking control and going out strong winners with a score of 1 - 18 to 1 - 11. However I learned that I need to attend a few more hurling games as I do not seem to know the rules just yet as I was at a loss a few times when the referee blew the whistle and even more so when he wrote the names of a few Monaghan players in his book. I was comforted when I realised that some of the Donegal players were also baffled. Next game for Monaghan is against Fingal, who also started their campaign with a win over Louth.
