Bishop's Diamond Jubilee

On Sunday, June 10th 2018 a Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated in St. Macartan's Cathedral to mark the diamond jubilee of Bishop Joseph Duffy's ordination to the priesthood. Chief celebrant was Monsignor Joseph McGuinness with Cardinal Sean Brady, Bishop Duffy and Bishop McDaid presiding. Also present was the Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher, Bishop John McDowell. Almost 500 people from all parts of the Diocese and further afield attended and about 30 priests concelebrating.  The Readers were Hilda McManus and Mary Duffy and psalmist Mary Reilly. Sacred music was provided by the Cathedral Folk Choir directed by Padraig Rocks. Prayers of the Faithful were read by Sr. Moya Cannon. The Gospel was pronounced by Fr. Kevin Malcolmson and Fr. Stephen Duffy was Master of Ceremonies. The Homily was given by Fr. Paddy McGinn and the gifts were presented by Mark and Karen McElwaine.  Roisin Treanor and Paul Cullen were Ministers of the Eucharist. In his homily Fr. McGinn sued the symbol of the Good Shepherd as told in the Gospel and stated that Bishop Duffy was the Good Shepherd to his flock for the 60 years of his priesthood. He recalled the many significant and cultural changes that have occurred in society during that time and said that Bishop Duffy had embraced changes and provided leadership in the diocese. At the end of Mass Bishop Duffy addressed the gathering and spoke of his priesthood and what it meant and means to him. he cannot see that he could have lived his life in any other way and he encouraged young men to consider the vocation as one very fulfilling and rewarding. In recent times Bishop Duffy has been researching and preparing a book on the life of St. Tiarnach of Clones fame and that Book was then launched by Msg Dick Mohan, PP of Clones. All then moved to the Hillgrove for refreshments and chat and the Book on St. Tiarnach was available there.
