2023 Christmas Day Swim.
The 2023 Christmas Day Swim at Emy Lake went ahead as usual only with a new organisation in charge. The previous organisers were the Monaghan Parents and Friends of Handicapped and they handed over to Errigal Truagh Special Needs. This was the 66th Christmas Day swim on Emy Lake as the first was organised by local youth of Murphys and Morroughs. The local Scout Master, Bennie McKenna, could see that this event could earn some funding for the local Boy Scouts and so for a number of years the proceeds of the event went to the Scouts. During this time Bennie passed away (RIP) and Dan Rogan took over the role. On his passing (RIP) the Monaghan group took on the organising role. It has always been a great success and has attracted huge numbers to the shore each Christmas Day. Some to enter the water and some to watch. Many come to have a chat with a neighbour or a friend or to meet up with someone home on holiday. It is always a joyful occasion and an enjoyable event with people coming from a wide area both North and South and 2023 has been no different other than that the numbers were slightly increased on previous years. All present could enjoy hot Soup and Sandwich, courtesy of Leslie Castle. Emergency back up was there, provided by Monaghan Civil Defence, Dungannon Subagua Club and Victor and Cormac Watterson. Sound and video recording was supplied by Murphy Video and the event was covered by the Northern Standard. Michael Treanor, who is chairman of the Errigal Truagh Special Needs, thanked everyone who helped in any way and a special thanks for all who entered the water and who came along to support the event.
