A Crit, or Criterium, is a bike race held on a short circuit, where the cyclists
race for a certain number of laps or for a special length of time. Any rider who
gets overlapped must drop out. It can also be a combination of time and laps where
the cycle for 15 minutes and then have three laps to the finish. This type of racing
is very common in Belgium and Holland and in the USA and is becoming more common
in Ireland. Over the past couple of months Emyvale Cycling Club has been taking part
in an Inter-Club competition, whereby clubs involved organise one or two events and
there are points for the top 10 winners and points for participation. At the end
the team with the highest points and the individual with the highest points aer declared
the winners. On Thursday evening, June 15th held a Crit in the grounds of St. Davnets.
It was an ideal setting though the rain caused the surface to become slippery and
a couple of riders ended up on the ground with no serious injury. This type of race
is good for spectators as the race keeps coming around and you see more of the action.
There were four groups on Thursday night and there was some excellent racing and
individual battles with plenty of excitement. The points awarded were added in to
the overall total and will help to determine the eventual winners. Well done to all
