Edelle McMahon nominated Edelle, our daughter, was recently nominated by Alice Daly, Tydavnet, for a Volunteer of the Year award and we attended, with Edelle and Alice, at the presentation of the awards which was held in the Garage Theatre, Monaghan, on Sunday last. It was a wonderful event and terrific to hear of the great work being done by Volunteers throughout the county. Edelle was nominated for her work with people living with dementia. She was going to some centres where people with dementia attended and then Covid struck. She knew that her work of singing assisted those with dementia and had a very comforting effect. However with Covid she was unable to go to the Centres and so decided to go live on Youtube each Monday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 8pm and performed her music. She calls them - Sundown Sessions. There was a huge reaction to this and many families reported a very positive outcome for those with dementia. Initially it was meant for families living with dementia but very quickly many others tuned in and it is now open to everyone every week and the Link will available here on emyvale.net or singalongwithedelle on Youtube Covid passed but Edelle decided to continue with her OnLine singing on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7pm as she learned from families that dementia was difficult at that time of day and so the families could tune in to her weekly performances and the family could watch and listen with wonderful outcomes. If they were unable to tune in any of the days they can always link in to it at a time that suits them. During her evenings there is a live chat opportunity where families request certain songs and chat with other people online. Edelle has now 294 Online sessions on Youtube and these are being used very regularly in family homes. Alice Daly heard of Edelle’s Sundown Sessions and, having listened, she was amazed at the reaction online and realised the huge benefit it was bringing to families with dementia in the home. As a result she nominated Edelle and she accompanied her to the Volunteer Awards Event on Sunday last. Edelle, and ourselves, would like to thank Alice sincerely for the nomination.
