‘Fireside Miscellany’:
‘Fireside Miscellany’ is a collection of Irish Memories, Meanderings and history printed in book form and it was launched at a function in the Markethouse, Monaghan, on Friday, November 2nd 2018. The book contains 43 stories of life and times as experienced by the authors during their life time and it is a most readable book. The authors are Denis and Josephine (Jo) O’Higgins and Dara McGabhann officially launched the book to a full house audience on Friday night. Dara was a most appropriate person to do so as she is a leader in the group known as The Moposogs. This group meet about twice each month and all are writers of song, poem or story. They work together sharing encouragement, ideas, know-how, pitfalls, talents, and friendships. Denis is a member and it was there that he was given the incentive and spur to commit his stories to book form. These stories from Denis and Josephine will recall former days for the older generation and educate the younger reader as to what Irish life was like some decades ago. There is also history in there and interesting facts, which place the stories and makes them come alive. There is humour and sadness, and mixtures of many emotions but all based on reality. This is a book you can hold for a single story or, captivated by the images it brings to mind, one might want to keep reading, but each story wil conjure up thoughts and dreams and time is needed to go with the flow and enjoy the pictures, and perhaps memories, each story paints. One of Denis’s stories will be a big feature in the major Ireland’s Own Annual this Christmas. We thank himself and Josephine for their stories and the enjoyment this book will bring to so many. We wish them success and encourage you to get a copy. It will also make a great Christmas present for a person who reads. The Launch was a lovely occasion with a full house and finger food but when Denis and Josephine and Dara read extracts from the book there was total silence as the audience hung on every sentence. One of the stories, written and read by Josephine was about the history of the McDonalds from Scotland - she is a McDonald. She read it to the group one night at the Moposogs and a member, Paddy McDonald, composed a song about the McDonalds and he performed that composition for us at the launch. There was great socialising and chatting after the formalities and people queued to get their copy autgraphed by both authors. Well done to all.
