Health Costs V Health Expenditure
Our health care is still going down hill with increasing numbers waiting for an appointment or treatment. The current Minister for Health and the Taoiseach, whoever they might be at any particular time over the years, have assured us that they were coming up with a plan and that the problems would be sorted shortly, that is until Leo came along and he told us it was complex and would take three years for the changes to take effect and then Simon arrives on the scene and on his early days in office he told us that he was drawing up a plan which would take ten years to implement and more recently that ten year plan has not begun yet but is being planned – and all the while the people of this country only shout when it is too late – when they or a relative suffers as a result of the poor service. We had the Health Boards running the show and politicians were very much involved there and politics decided who got what and not where the need was. So they got rid of the Health Boards and the HSE was set up and it was to remove the political influence from the decision making. More importantly for the politicians it meant that the finger of blame could never be pointed at them – they hid behind the HSE but at the same time had major influence. Now everyone realises that the HSE does not and cannot work. Billions of euro are ploughed into our Health System annually and it is not enough, it has to be supplemented with extra billions and they still cannot provide for the needs of the people of this country. But let’s not just feel angry at that waste of money – unfortunately no one seems to know how these billions are spent, on what, by whom, for what. The politicians don’t know as one admitted at a health meeting in Monaghan recently. The Department of Health does not seem to know either. The HSE itself does not seem to know either. However our politicians are our representatives, tasked with looking after our interests and how our tax, and all the other payments we make to Government, are spent and here we are – they do not know. The do know how much they are paid and how to get extra payments for themselves but beyond that Health seems to be a closed shop. Add to those billions the amount that citizens pay to other health needs. The time volunteers give to save the Government paying for those services, the amount of money voluntary organisations collect for the public every year to pay for services that Government should be paying for and there are hundreds of these organisations, the amount of money that people pay, sometimes doing without something else, in order to have Health Insurance, the amount of money from our Taxes that is now being used to pay the Private Health system to carry out work that should be done by the public system with the money we give it, the amount of money that is being paid out for people to go to England, Poland,  America etc to get treatment that was and should be available here in Ireland. It is time we said STOP to our politicians and instruct them to get our Government in order to run our health services properly and within budget. I also ask the question – do we really need the HSE AND the Department of Health and the Minister of Health’s office. When one adds up the number of people involved in those three areas as administrators and we cannot get things working then surely something serious must be done. But will the people of Ireland do anything?
