January 2017 Art Network

January Art Network Showcase took place in the Markethouse, Monaghan, on Wednesday, January 25th at 7.30pm. I am beginning to find it difficult to come up with new complimentary adjectives to describe the talent on display and the entertainment value provided by these Showcases but 'top class' describes both talent and entertainment. First up this month was Pat Mooney who is based in the Cavan/Monaghan area and is an expert and highly acclaimed Graphic Designer, illustrator, typographer, branding expert and a specialist  both print and web. His CV is extensive and very impressive and a display of some of his work is proof of his ability. His work can be seen at but his chatty flowing commentary with his display of work made for very interesting and imaginative listening. Next up was Bronagh McCabe who has established a name for herself as a singer/songwriter. She is from Corcaghan and her work is influenced by people like Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and KT Tunstall. Her powerful voice has been heard regularly in McKenna's and other venues and we are likely to hear a lot more from this excellent performer. The usual interval followed and this is a great time of chat, socialising and an opportunity to meet with the performers, while enjoying appetising fingerfood and refreshments. The second half began with a man, who needed no introduction as he has performed on some of the biggest stages at home and abroad, sometimes as a solo act, other times with his twin brother Tommy and still other times as a member of the cast of a big stage, TV or film production. I am talking of course of John McArdle and he entertained us with clips from some of the his work over the years. Behind the scenes his talent and knowledge was a huge asset when he was consultant to the Primary Schools Drama Curriculum, as Director of the Young Abbey Theatre, and many other areas of theatrical productions. He is a genius with language, a fantastic actor, a brilliant writer with an imaginative, inventive and fertile mind and a humble person. The final act was a group called Dílis from the Tullycorbett and Aughnamullen. They play traditional and are under the direction of Francis McMahon and have been acclaimed for the quality of their music and have reached the regional final of Siamsa Gael Linn for the second year running. They have already many titles in their collection from Fleadh and Scor. The group consists of Stephen McMahon, Tomasina McGinnity, Aodhan Brennan, Leah Marron, Colm McMahon, Daniel Tomany, Cáit Brennan and Finbarr Brennan.  The Showcase was MC'ed by Lorcan McGrane, comedian. Well done to all the performers and to the organising committee for another fabulous night.
