Truagh GFC held the annual U11 Blitz for the John 'Paddy' Treanor Cup in St. Mellans
on Saturday, July 28th 2018. Twenty teams turned up to participate and this made
for a great competition. The event had everything - four great pitches, plenty of
changing facilities, plenty to eat and drink, plenty of stewards and plenty of footballs.
The action began at 10am with league games played on all four pitches simultaneously.
This demanded a good force of referees, lines men, umpires and stewards and all these
went into action from the start. The football was top class and it was terrific to
see clubs from Monaghan, Tyrone, Cavan, Dublin, Donegal, Louth and Armagh playing
against each other. The standard of play was very high and every player was putting
his all into trying to get the win. Then the rain came down - light at first but
then getting heavier and heavier and no one noticed. The play continued as if the
sun was shining and even though the conditions made good play difficult nevertheless
the players adapted very quickly and the top class performances were visible on every
pitch. It was afternoon before the finals were arrived at and there were many tired
legs but for those in the final the tiredness was conquered with adrenaline. In the
end Gowna defeated Emyvale for the Cup; Truagh defeated Sean MacCumhaill for the
Shield; Monaghan Harps defeated Castleblayney Faughs for the Trophy and Derrynoose
defeated The Geraldines for the Plate. Congratulations to all the winners and well
done to the organisers and all who participated.
