Lithuanian Community in Monaghan Celebrates 10th

The Lithuanian Community in Monaghan was formally set up ten years ago and to celebrate the occasion a big gathering with entertainment and cultural celebrations took place in the Four Seasons Hotel on Saturday, March 11th. The event was attended by the Lithuanian Ambassador to Ireland,  Rasa Adomaitienė; Virginija Umbrasiene, Counsellor Lithuanian Embassy;  Arunas Teiserskis, Chairperson of the Lithuanian Community in Ireland; Lithuanian Chaplain, Fr. Egidijus Arnasius; Lithuanian School Principal, Edite Vaitlaitiene; Prinicpals of St. Louis Girls School and St. Louis Secondary School; Deputy Caoimhghin O'Caolain; Senator Robbie Gallagher; Councillors Raymond Aughey, Sean Conlon, and Mayor of Municipal District, David Maxwell, who addressed the gathering on behalf of the people of Monaghan; Bill and Ann Goggins, representing Teach na nDaoine; and Tomas Zalagaitis, Chairperson of the Monaghan Lithuanian Community. The Ambassador presented the Monaghan Lithuanian Community with a Pop-up Banner as a present from the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Lithuania and other groups presented gifts to the Monaghan group. One striking moment came at the beginning of the event when harpist and singer, Vetra Trinkunaite, sang the Lithuanian National Anthem and then Amhran na bhFiann in Irish. The performances continued during which one of the original founders Skyped a message to all present with her congratulations and best wishes.
