On Saturday, May 16th Ben Sherry, member of Emyvale Boxing Club, won Boy 1 39kg CYP
Championship in Crossgar, County Down by defeating Ronan O'Reilly from Saint John
Bosco Boxing Cl;ub, Newry. The previous weekend Ben Booked his place in the final
by defeating Sean Dowdall, the current Boy 1 39kg Ulster Champion from St. Malachy's
Boxing Club, Camlough, County Down. These were two great victories for Ben as it
shows his class in defeating the Ulster Champion and going on then to defeat another
excellent opponent in O'Reilly. It is also great experience for him and predicts
a great future for him to stay in the sport. Congratulations to him and we wish him
further success in the bouts ahead. It is also another feather in the cap of the
Emyvale Boxing Club to have its members taking home titles like this and satisfying
for their sponsors, Silver Hill Farm and Town of Monaghan Co op, that they have contributed
to this success with their financial assistance. Well done too to the coaches in
the club including Ben's dad, Enda.
But then it did not finish there because on Saturday night in Crossgar young Dylan
Sherry boxed an excellent exhibition performance against Guy Wallace from Sacred
Heart Boxing Club in Newry. It is terrific to see our local youth taking such a keen
and committed attitude to their sport and gaining in confidence to go out there and
mix it with the best. Well done to Dylan and to the club mentors.
And it did not end there either as on Monday night, May 18th Enda Brennan, a well
know and respected Boxing Referee and a good friend of the Emyvale Club, arrived
to present a cheque to the Club from Tyholland Drama Group. Tyholland Drama had planned
to perform their play in the Emyvale Leisure Centre in aid of the Boxing Club but
just the week previously they had to cancel as a number of the cast were bereaved
with the sudden, sad and unexpected death of Dermot McKenna. The Drama Group later
performed in Tyholland and then made a donation to the Emyvale Boxing Club. Enda
himself was a member of the cast. The club expresses their sincere appreciation to
Enda and the Tyholland Drama Gorup for their very generous gesture in the circumstances.
