Monaghan Scor Final

As someone who participated in Scor for many years and as one who regards the work done by Scor committees as just as important to the community as the football, I was extremely disappointed with the Monaghan County finals of Scor which were held on Friday evening last January 20th. in Tullycorbett. There are 33/34 clubs in the county and only six clubs participated. Now the Quiz competition was held separately and that would add another club or two names to the list but on the night for the six competitions we had representatives from six clubs - Truagh in 4; Emyvale in 3; Scotstown in 3; Drumhowan, Inniskeen and Killeevan all in 1 each. Previously there were semi-finals with up to twelve clubs participating in most of the sections in each semi-final. The finals were by tickets only and tickets were like gold dust. Clubs regarded this aspect of club activity as very important as it was preserving and promoting the Irish culture just as much as the football was promoting Irish games. However on Friday night all participants gave of their best and provided the small number of supporters with excellent entertainment and enjoyment. Well done to all who took part and congratulations to the winners. The prizes were presented by Brendan McNally, representing Acorn Life Insurance. Also present was the new County Chairman, Michael O McMahon and he was there to see his club, Scotstown, take the overall Scor Award for this year. It was accepted by Molly McKeever. Carmel Connolly sang Amhrán na bhFiann and MC for the night was Mary Lennon who kept the competitions flowing smoothly. The results were:  Figure Dance -  Emyvale (Cathy Kirke, Mary Kirke, Michaela McGee, Michaela McQuaid, Rachel Treanor, Sinead McCarron, Carol Flood, Michelle McGlone); Solo Singing - Scotstown - Molly McKeever; Set Dance - Emyvale (Peadar Sherry, Stephen Maguire, Donal Kavanagh, Gerard McGonnell, Mark Kirke, Cathy Kirke, Carol Flood and Michaela McGee); Recitation - Scotstown (Paddy Sherlock with 'No Reason to Complain'); Ballad Group - Truagh (Emily McMeel, Clodagh McMeel, Derbla McGinn and Meghan McKenna); Instrumental Music - Scotstown (Brian Harraghy, Garbhán Harraghy, Emer McCague and Darragh McCague).
