On Friday, September 29th 2017 I met up with a group of Canadian and US visitors
who spent three nights in Monaghan and used it as a base to visit Belfast, Giants
Causeway and other significant tourist destinations. On that Friday night I met them
in the Sliabh Beagh Hotel, Knockatallon, where they enjoyed a sumptuous dinner during
which they were entertained by members of the Monaghan MOPOSOGS, with their music,
song and poems, and were given an exhibition of Irish Dancing by a group of young
local dancers. The dancing set the toes tapping and they had a great giggle listening
to Enda Brennan relate one of his very humorous poetic stories. They had more music
song and dance led by Seamus McElwain and indeed they had their own talent who entertained
all. The group of 84 came from various parts of Canada and the USA and this was all
part of a 14 day tour of Ireland. They were in the very capable hands of Rice Coaches.
During the event in the Sliabh Beagh they met with members of the Clann McKenna and
Cllr. Sean Conlon, Chairman of the Canada Day Festival in Monaghan, addressed the
gathering and welcomed them and gave them details of the Canada Day and the Monaghan
connection. The visitors all seemed to be enjoying themselves and those I spoke to
stated that they were delighted with the trip and have wonderful memories to take
home with them. We do hope they enjoyed Monaghan and that they and/or their friends
will come to visit us again. During the night too we were introduced to Stephen and
Jessica who were just arriving from the Cliff of Moher, where Stephen proposed to
Jessica and she had accepted. Stephen is a grandson of the late Mick Corrigan, who
was from this part of the world and who would be known to many of the senior citizens.
We add congratulations to the happy couple and wish them well.
