The Wednesday Club: It all began with members of the Emyvale Development Association deciding to hold a Tea/Coffee morning in The Restaurant on Main Street on a Wednesday in 2018 but towards the end of that year the Restaurant closed and then began the search for alternative suitable accommodation. With assistance from St. Vincent de Paul the club was able to move into a larger room beside the Parish offices on the Glaslough Road and the tea/coffee became a weekly event with more and more people joining the club. Then Covid struck and the Club closed its doors. In early 2022 it was decided that the event could start up again by using the Main Hall in Emyvale Leisure Centre and have the ability to space the tables at an appropriate distance and with fewer persons sitting at each table. Again the numbers began to rise and it caused no problems as there was plenty of space for all. Every Wednesday the event begins at 10.30am with Tea/Coffee and a variety of eats like home made wheaten Bread, Boiled Cake, scones and a variety of biscuits and bars. On special occasions, like Halloween, Easter and Christmas, there will be a special like minced pies etc. Then a Raffle is held for four or five fun prizes and this is followed by a Guest Speaker. He/she will be someone who has a story to tell and it may be about their lives, their business, their likes or their adventures. Some times it is a qualified person to speak on health matters, home security and other interesting and helpful talks. Of course at times there is someone who can make us laugh and that is also beneficial for everyone. Regarding cost - there is no cost but a box is available for anyone who wishes to make a donation. Four members of Emyvale Development Association started this event and three other ladies volunteered to help out with laying the tables with required paraphernalia and then serving the tea/coffee. Of course there are also hands needed to clear up and clean up afterwards but the current team carry out this job with expertise and proficiency. The Christmas gathering took place on Wednesday 19th December and appropriate decoration and food was the order of the day. Instead of a speaker Vivian McKenna and Tony Cannon were asked to entertain and lead the gathering in singing Christmas Carols and all enjoyed the event. The Wednesday Club will not reopen until January 10th so you should come along and enjoy the experience.
The pic above is how the Hall was decorated for Halloween.
You can see we had a spare table for the Christmas Wednesday club. Will you help to fill it when we return on Wednesday January 10th 2024
These last two photos show some of the workforce for our Wednesday Club preparing for the Christmas event. Good employees are hard to get - oh sorry - these are all volunteers and the 7th is behind the camera.
