Christmas Day Swim in Emy Lake

The Cristmas Day swim at Emy Lake took place in 2016 as usual. This was the 48th Christmas Day swim in Emy but it did not become an official event until the Late Benny McKenna organised it as afundraiser for the Donagh Boy Scouts in the mid-seventies. Since then it has continued every year as Dan Rogan took over its running after Benny's departure and since Dan died the Parents and Friends of persons with Intellectual disability have continued the tradition with funds going to that organisation. 2016 was a mild enough day but wet and, though Conor, the Gale force winds, did not come as severe as thought possible, conditions were uncomfortable for spectators and partiicipants. However there was still an excellent turn-out and everyone was in great spirits and festive cheer. Almost 60 brave souls took the plunge and they represented all ages and came from as far away as Sheffield. Our pictures, by Edelle McMahon, show some of the people present and most of those who participate. Three people completed the challenge earlier as they had an appointment elsewhere. All in all it was a success and the hot soup for everyone was enjoyed as neighbours stayed for a while chatting and wishing best wishes to all. Gradually all headed for home, the tents were packed, the Civil defence crew was stood-down, Victor and Joseph in the rescue boat pulled in to port, donation boxes gathered and off to the Christmas dinner. Happy Christmas to all.
