Are We Going Backwards. We are not moving forward as a country and we are not even staying level, we are actually going backwards. Just when things were going our way everything took a turn of the worse. We were without a Government for months and then we got a ‘put together’ government, which did not change things. They have spent a good portion of their time discussing who should resign and what they should do about all the problems we have and where they can direct money to keep the lid on things. Of course this backward advance can be put down to the Coronavirus and it can be blamed for all the added problems, or can it? Let’s look at two of the problems. Health: Health is major on the agenda at the moment and has been for the past eleven months but really it has been on the agenda for years. The only difference is the main item on the agenda. Now it is all about Covid and what we should be doing to reduce the numbers and save lives. It has been about making sure there is capacity in our hospitals for the Covid patients, even if they have to pay millions to the Private Hospitals to get their beds if needed. Meanwhile the patients with the more ‘run of the mill’ problems come a not so close second. People waiting for a diagnosis are waiting, and for some it will be too late, when they do get their results. For others it will mean much tougher treatment to get a cure. For most it will mean having to put up with the pain and mental stress of waiting. The waiting lists were already high, when Covid arrived but they have increased and increased since then as so much was postponed in order to deal with Covid. I know one person whose cancer checks were postponed in March and they are still on a waiting list. Consultants tell us that about 300 people die each year in Ireland due to overcrowding and delays in getting hospital treatment but little changes. Nurses, doctors, consultants, beds, etc were all badly needed prior to Covid and we still need them but have we any money now? The usual way the authorities deal with a problem in our health services is to redirect funds from one area to another and, as soon as the media drops the story, the money is directed to another problem but few of the problems are ever sorted. Shifting the deck chairs comes to mind. Yes I think our health services are going backwards. Security: There are many security problems and the list of murders and personal attacks all over our country tells us that. There are not enough Gardai and one of the reasons is that the conditions of work and salary are not attracting the young men and women to join up and the same is happening in the Army, Navy, Nurses, Doctors, Teachers but not TDs or senators - they can get a raise in salary anytime they like. Speaking about Gardai – Emyvale Garda Barracks was burned down and we were promised that it would be rebuilt at an early date. Then they decided to change a dwelling house, beside the Barrack site, into a Barrack but they did not have planning permission to change the use of the building. When they did apply there was an objection and, in my estimation, it was only right that it be objected to. Anyhow a year later and we still have no barrack and indeed we were to get more Gardai and what has happened? Not only did we not get more Gardai we lost our sergeant as well. Congratulations to Declan on his promotion and we wish him success and thank him for all he did for this area while the Sergeant in charge. However the chances of us getting a new sergeant would be about the same as our chances of winning the Lotto. We will be merged with Monaghan and our security will come from there. Now they do not have enough Gardai in Monaghan, or indeed in the Cavan/Monaghan division, to cover the area as it is, never mind expanding the area. I think we need to apply to the top brass as they are the ones to make the decision. We may not be the only place needing more Gardai but we have an added need because of our location. Its just another example of us going backwards. If you are talking to a local councillor, TD or Senator please raise the issue and expect them to do something about it.
