Glaslough Harriers AC Hosted our 42nd Road Races Sponsored By UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS on 12th/13th March 2022. It is a great Honour and Privilege to be Glaslough Harriers AC Club Chairman. We celebrated on the 12 th /13 th March this year the 42 nd Anniversary of the John O’Reilly John Curley Road races. It is a great testament to the past and present members of the Glaslough Harriers 5k road race still being held and supported so well after 42 years. We made a bold decision to change the format of the Races this year to a weekend of festival of Running in Glaslough Village. Athletes from all over the County and beyond came together for our Juvenile races first up on Saturday 12 th for a competitive competition. We had a record turn out from All the Juvenile Clubs in County Monaghan. Monaghan Phoenix, Clones AC, Oriel AC, Carrickmacross AC. which was greatly appreciated by our Club. We were also delighted to welcome a New Club to the Village Races from Glenmore Athletics Club. Glenmore also had entries in our Special Needs Race. Clubs that always support were there in strong numbers Armagh, Cranford , Letterkenny to name only a few. Bernadine Gormley and Briege Mc Kenna, Amy Hamill organised a great group of our Juvenile and Junior athletes to take entries in the Oakland Centre with an early start to the morning at 9am. They provided the numbers for the Juvenile races and smooth delivery of the results sheets with Cup winners and Overall Clubs Results. We are very luck to have these dedicated members in our Club. Thanks for all your hard work a lot of it in the backroom where it may not always be acknowledged. Following our race Programme, the Juvenile Races we had a very good start with our Confined race for All Harriers Children. Our Special needs Race which was won again this Year by Pauric Kelly. This was Pauric Ninth Year to win the Special Needs Race. Congratulations to Pauric and his Family. Patsy and Ann Kelly Pauric parents were there to present the Medals and Trophies to our Juvenile Race Programme from U8 to u16 Boys and Girls. Patsy and Ann have a very long and proud history of Service for Glaslough Harriers. Thanks to Caroline Mc Kenna and her Team for managing the Finish line of the Juvenile Programme. We presented Three Cups and a Trophy to our Club Representatives in u/12 Boys and Girls and Under u14 Boys and Girls. Peter Prichard Cup and the Deidre Duffy trophy was won by Two young ladies from Club with great potential Cara Mc Cormack and Aishling Loughran. Our Boys were not to be out shined as Aaron Bell and Barney Mc Quaid stepped up to the podium to collect the Phelim Mc Quaid Cup and Mc Kenna Cup. We were honoured to have Yvonne McQuaid on Behalf of Phelim founder member of Club for coming along Presenting the Cup and supporting our current team of young athletes. We also had Bernie Murphy on Behalf of the Mc Kenna Family Presenting their family Cup on behalf of Pat Mc Kenna. Bernie and her family are still involved in athletes and her son Jack is an accomplished Pole Vaulter. Pat Mc Kenna in June 1950 was the Ulster Novice Cross Country Champion and in a sprint finish after a one Mile race beat his teammate Mick Mc Kenna in a well-timed run. Pat represented our Club in Irish Junior International Cross- Country Race in Dublin. His many accomplishments were winning Ulster Senior team medals in the years from 1951-1956. Pat’s Daughter (Bernadette Murphy) and family have been particularly supportive over the years as Coach, Club Officer, and Committee member for several years, the Club is very grateful for all you do for our Club. The Peter Pritchard Cup was presented by Matthew Gibbons on behalf of the Pritchard family. We are delighted to have members of these Family with long tradition with the Club still given such commitment to our Club. The Juvenile Races Overall Cup Sir Shane Leslie was won by the Clones AC Juvenile Club. It was for the Second year and a great achievement for their Club, Coaches, mentors’ parents as could be seen from the delight of the Athletes. Eamonn Hackett, Harriers AC Club Chairperson 2022 Presented the Cup on Behalf of the Leslie family which has stayed supportive of the Club to this Present day with Sammy Leslie now our Honorary president. That spirit of the Club is alive and well today especially as we have a very committed group of coaches over the past number of years giving great stability to our Club. The Head Coach of Noel Kennedy leads a team of coaches who train our young athletes on various night in our Grounds in Emyvale. We are indebted to these coaches for giving up their time and effort to encourage all our young athletes to achieve the best of their ability. On listing these coaches I acknowledge there are others also helping in various ways in our Club administration and various other roles. Declan Mc Caul, Clare O Hanlon Geary, Amy Hamill, Joanna Mc Grath, Brenda Fields (McKenna) Padraig Mc Kenna, Amy Hamill, Niamh Tierney , Gavin Treanor , Keith Hannigan Brenda Mc Cormack, Paul Mc Cormack , Pat Mc Quaid , Ronan and Cian Mc Kenna . We have strong administration team of Ole Fields, Sabrina Mc Cooey Competition Secretary, Catherine Hanley, Andy Treanor, Patricia Lavery ,Clare Loughran, Michelle Reid , Apologies if any others have been missed in this acknowledgement. On Sunday we had a great start to the Day as the weather always a very important factor in any race day started to improve, wind died down and Sun shone on the officials as they went about their business of setting up the course and finish line for our Senior 5k One of The Clubs Stalwarts Peter Mc Kenna was n hand in early morning start with putting out the K Signs on our chosen route. He was assisted on the set up of the Finishing Tunnel and Gantry for the Clock and Chip Timing mechanism by Declan Mc Nally. This was Peter Second day setting up the Clock and Gantry for the finish line. Peter mc Kenna nd his Family dedication and commitment to the Club is second to none. The Mc Nally Family are part of the backbone of the Club for several years and it was with great delight to me that when the call went out for help Seamus and Paula Mc Nally landed at the Hall to take charge of the Check in and registration of the Senior athletes. They were joined very shortly afterwards by Terry and Patricia Mc Caffrey in the Hall. They did a lot of good work as we had a brilliant turnout of Senior Runners. They ran the Check in smoothly for the Senior race with Brendan Mc Daid Northwest Chip Timing we are indebted for their assistance. We also have been fortunate to have a strong Senior Grouping lead by Declan Mc Nally and Carol Flood who train regularly at our grounds in Emyvale, Emy Lake and in Rossmore Park Monaghan. We were very fortunate to have support of two Senior Coaches Aidan Mc Kenna and Michael Kerr. Both coaches were on hand the day of the race to prepare our Senior athletes for their race. The Club thanks both men for their dedication and training of our Club members. The race had significant numbers entered for the race. One Hundred and Seventy-Seven runners opted for Chip timing of their race. We had other runners from our very loyal Local Jolly Joggers group lead by Geraldine Mc Aree who walked and ran the race earlier in the morning unfortunately in inclement weather, but nothing fazes this group of Harriers supporters. We are delighted you could Join us on the day for our road race programme. Another Group of local supporters the Joggernauts had both Runners and walkers join us on the morning of the race. These Athletes had run the previous day in Derry 10 Miler such was their commitment to their local race they came in strong numbers to support the run. The Senior race started shortly after 11am as we had a strong entry on the day. Murphy Video hire, Gregory Murphy and Fabian Murphy again did an extremely professional Job in setting up, our PA for our MC Brian Finn. Brian was chairman of the Club for several years and is never far away as a Sponsor and Club official to assist the club in any way he can. We lined up the runners and were delighted to Welcome back Yared Derese from Carrick Aces winner in 2019 and 2020 race record holder. We had runners Just to name a few regular supporters from Monaghan Phoenix , Clones , Monaghan Town Runners, Oriel , Carrick Aces , Blaney Rockets , Armagh . We are indebted to these Clubs for making our race such a success. The run was very fast although the weather for speed was restrictive Yared came in to finish the race for an impressive THIRD win of our race in a time of 14.45, his record of 14.33 in 2019 and 14.24 in 2020 still holds Course Record, Yared is the Proud Winner and holder of the John Corley Cup. Conor Maguire Monaghan Phoenix athlete came second 15.00 min dead. Conor has a great ability and is already an Athlete to watch in the coming years on the National and International circuit. Monaghan Phoenix and All County Monaghan athlete supporters wish him well. Armagh Club had a very strong Senior Men’s Team who positioned very highly in the results lead home by Fergal Delaney in third position. This helped Armagh to win the Coveted Senior Men John O Reilly Cup. The Senior Woman winner Denise Mc Cann Glabally Runners won the Felix Sherry Cup in an impressive time of 19.07. Other notable winners were Yasmin O Leary to retain the Fr Clerkin Cup, Armagh won Senior Ladies Team. Junior Men’s Team was won by Monaghan Phoenix and Tom Doherty won the Gene Connolly Cup. The Club would like to Thank ALL the representations of the families for the Senior Cups for taking the Time to come and Present the Cups on Behalf of their families. AS always we have a very supportive community in Glaslough Tidy Towns and The GDA ,thank you for the use of your facility in the Oakland Centre. The Tidy Towns Group were out in force prior to the race lead by Gareth Corrigan Kevin Mc Kinney Gabby Mc Quaid Concepta Mc Nally , Gaddy Mc Quaid , Jean Mc Kenna , Delma Mulligan.
