Intermediate Football Championship 2019: A double header in Scotstown on Sunday August 18th was an attractive proposition and the weather seemed good. First up was Monaghan Harps V Sean MacDiarmada and this should have been an easy win for the Harps judging by the League standings but the Championship can oftenturn out to be totally different to the League. And so it was here - Seans meant business but the physical strength of the Harps stopped many an attack and forced turn-overs. However Seans never game in and had a few chances to even the score but again Harps came back at them and finished 0 - 18 to the Seans 1 - 11. In my book it was’nt a great football game but then it is the result that counts? The second game between Emyvale V Cremartin promised to be a closer affair and both sides had good reason to make sure of victory but again it was a disappointing display from both teams. Emyvale started the better but then Cremartin took control and looked as if they could proceed to close the game with a victory but once again Emyvale hit a good patch and sealed the win with a couple of very good scores at the dying mnutes. Emyvale may have had 15 players on the field but only a few of them got into this game in earnest. At this level and in championship, teams cannot afford to carry passengers - it has to be a full tam effort. They may have been unlucky with a couple of points that could have been and a possibility of two penalties that could have been but that is no excuse for poor performance. Having said that, it is on those who did perform we should concentrate because of their extra effort in making up for the vacancies and ensuring that the team goes forward and hopefully will have a more convincing win next day out. I was also disappointed with the turnout of spectators both for the teams and independents. There needs to be a serious discussion about that sometime. Below I have images from the second game and then some from the first game.
