Action to aid Haiti after Earthquake.
Keith Murphy was one of over 270 volunteers who went to Haiti last October for one week to build 40 houses for the local people in a specific region in the north of the country. In preparation for the visit he raised over €6,000, which was used to get him there and to buy materials and requirements for the local population. He had a very successful trip but told us of the extreme poverty he witnessed there - indeed words could not describe conditions for the people trying to survive there. The Building project (Build it Week) organised and being implemented by Haven Partnership provides some relief for some families but so much more needs to be done.
Then the terrible news arrived that a very strong earthquake hit the country and devastated huge tracts of the country. Up to 200,000 lives were lost and even today, Feb 9th, four weeks later, a live person has been pulled from the rubble. However low the level of poverty existing before the quake the needs of the survivors are now basic for continued survival. Even though the area in which Keith was working escaped the worst of the quake the consequences of the devastation will effect everyone in the country and help is badly needed by the various organisations trying to assist. Keith decided to organise a couple of events to give people of our area the opportunity to subscribe and donate money which will be channeled through Haven Partnership and thus help the Haitians.
On Saturday evening last he held an Over 35s Gaelic game between Truagh and Emyvale at St. Oliver Plunkett Park, Tully, and it was a great success in that it raised over €740 for the cause. A great evenings fun was had by all and the game ended with a great goal from Raymond Kelly to leave the game all square cancelling out Kieran Mc Ginn’s screamer early on in the second half .. The final score Emyvale 3 - 6 Truagh 2 - 9 . Many thanks to all the lads who turned up on the night, to the supporters, to match ref, Frank Murphy, to Emyvale GAA for the use of their excellent facilities, and also to Truagh GAA for their after match refreshments and to all who contributed. Total raised on the night came to a impressive 745 euro to be forwarded to the HAVEN EARTHQUAKE FUND. Any further donations will be gladly accepted by Keith and forwarded to Haven.
