EMYVALE
Emyvale Leisure Centre.
Emyvale Leisure Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary on Friday, June 11th. Fabian Murphy and his committee prepared an excellent programme of events which showcased the very busy place the Leisure Centre is. One can recall those who talked about ‘white elephants’ when the Centre was under construction but the last 25 years of activity there is proof positive that it is providing great benefits to the community. Fabian listed the many activities being held in the Centre and the people of the area cannot complain that there is nothing going on as there is something there for every age group.
The evening began with a parade from the bridge to the Centre with Monaghan Community
Brass Band and Mayor Monica leading. Paula Mc Aree and Eugene O’Brien carried the
banner and there followed groups representing various sporting clubs and organisations
in the area. The Band gave a recital outside the Centre and then other groups gave
an exhibition of their activity in the main hall. Meanwhile organisations had stands
displaying what they have to offer and inviting participation. The Blackwater School
of Music provided entertainment as did a group of dancers from the McQuaid School
of Dancing. Upstairs there were further displays and the Boxing Club was in action.
This club was launched during the evening and this is another great activity for
the Centre.
Fabian then spoke of the past 25 years and Peadar McMahon wished the Centre
continued success for the next 25 years. The winners of the Logo Competition were
announced - Lauren Murphy, Brianna McPhillips and Enda Fields. Emyvale Development
Association sponsored these prizes. The draw took place for a free raffle and those
prizes were presented.
Everyone then enjoyed a wonderful repast and thanks to Emy
Belles who took responsibility for the catering.
There were many other things going
on throughout the evening and it was terrific to see so many people come out to support
and to show their appreciation to those who run the Centre and have provided the
Community with such a facility for the past 25 years.
It is suggested that a record
be kept of the first 25 years and that those involved in the building and fund-raising
should have their memories recorded for posterity. Perhaps the committee might try
to bring them all together some night and just let the chat flow.
Here are some photos
of the 25th anniversary. Murphy Video Services recorded the entire event and it will
be very interesting to compare this occasion with the Official Opening which they
also have on tape.
