Emyvale Wednesday Tea/Coffee Mornings. The Wednesday Morning Tea/ Coffee morning in Emyvale Leisure Centre continues with a big attendance each week. This event, organised by Emyvale Development Association, has been operating each week for over 4 years minus a couple of weeks twice a year for holidays and the year of Covid. It begins at 10.30am with tea or coffee, homemade wheaten bread, Pancakes, scones etc, with butter, cheese and jam. This is followed by a draw for prizes, which includes household articles and a homemade wheaten is a star prize. The third section of the event is a guest speaker. Over the months many ladies and men have addressed the attendance telling a story of their lives, or the building of their business or something special in the lives. There have been comedians, musicians, and story tellers and ordinary people to tell their story and all very interesting and enjoyable to all present. Wednesday of last week there was a very special happening, more by chance than organised. It became known that Fr. Pat McMahon was saying a daily Mass in Glennan. Fr. Pat was born in the Emyvale area at Drumully, attended Edenmore NS. While Pat was attending Edenmore NS. the family moved to Monaghan where their father, Benny, had a Public House in Park Street and Pat changed to the Brothers in Monaghan. then St. Macartan’s College and Maynooth and Carlow becoming a priest and spending his life in the service of God in a parish in Manchester and is now somewhat retired. While in Manchester he became close friends with footballers for United and, of course, attended their home games. He also became a well known and valued priest to his very large congregations. When conditions allowed he would take a quick visit home but he had little opportunity to spend time with the friends. Now in retirement he has more time and last week he visited Monaghan and on three days he said Mass in St. Mary’s, Glennan. It was then he came in contact with former school mates and was delighted to have time to enjoy their company. They were heading to the Tea/coffee morning after Mass and he travelled with them and enjoyed meeting his former class mates and all who attended in the Leisure Centre. The Guest Speaker for the event was Paddy Sherry and Fr. Pat and all present really enjoyed Paddy’s stories. It was a wonderful occasion for all and Fr. Pat departed with the best wishes of all there. It is hoped that he will pay another visit to the area in the not too distant future.
