World Handball Champion 2009 - Padraig McKenna.
On Friday, Oct 16th County Monaghan Handball Board hosted a reception for the county handball players who were involved in the World Championships in Portland with special applause for the Title winners, Darren Doherty and Padraig McKenna. M.C. Was John P.Graham and he welcomed the players: John Treanor, Michael McCarron, Padraig McKenna, Darren Doherty and made apologies for Peter Larkin who was unable to be present due to illness. John P introduced the various speakers which included: Austin McKenna, Co. Secretary of the County Handball Board; John Connolly, Chairman of County GAA Board; Heather Humphries, Mayor of Co. Monaghan, Sean Conlon, Mayor of Monaghan Town; Chris Curran, GAA Handball National Director; and Katrina Moen, Chairperson of the County Handball Board. Austin gave a brief outline of the participation and games and this really put the World Championships in perspective and made the winning of three world titles all the more laudable. All the speakers congratulated all involved and gave special praise to Padraig and Darren for bringing such honour to Monaghan and Ireland. People were encouraged to get involved in this great game and to help promote it among the youth. The work being done in clubs and local second level schools was also acknowledged and Martin McEntee and Michael Todd were thanked for their work in the schools. The function ended with refreshments.
