The Farney Barney.

A group of Monaghan supporters, led by Seamus McEneaney, organised a Celebrity Big Boxing Night in the Hillgrove Hotel on Monday, Dec 28th. Football players from various clubs went into training for four or five weeks and were paired off to meet each other in the ring. There were twelve bouts in all and everyone of them was a closely fought contest, with every contestant giving his all to win. From North Monaghan Brendan McKenna, Emyvale, and Darren Todd, Truagh, were in action. Brendan met Francis Caulfield from Scotstown and the referee stopped the contest when Brendan began bleeding profusely from the nose. Darren had a very tough test and at times was trailing behind but he put in a strong finish to draw the match against his opponent Matthew McKenna from Inniskeen. Raymond Treanor, from Truagh but who owns a Bar in Rockcorry sponsored a Rockcorry player, Anthony Tate, but he was unsuccessful in his bout. There were about 1,500 spectators in attendance and the fight which drew the loudest reaction from the crowd was a bout between Jason Hughes Blayney and Dick Clerkin, Currin. Hughes was victorious. The event was sponsored by Philip Traynor, who is from South Monaghan but is a big business man in New York.
