Monaghan Football.
Monaghan Ladies played Tyrone in the Ulster championship in Casement Park Belfast
on Sunday June 6th as an opening game for the Monaghan men against Armagh. The Ladies
survived and although they were the better team they struggled at times to contain
the forward bursts from Tyrone. It was point for point throughout and at one stage
it looked as if Monaghan would take control but it was a late point that sealed victory
for them. Meanwhile the men had a very good day. Eyebrows were raised prior to the
game when it was announced that the fullback - Darren Hughes - would play in goals
and that Eoin Lennon was starting in mid-field. Rumours abounded as to the why and
what was going on but it did not seem to interfere with the spirit of the players
on the field. From the off they seemed a determined bounch and whatever happened
maybe gave them that extra hunger as they all played with a great zeal and purpose.
The game was more or less over early in the second half when it was very noticeable
that Armagh was not going to get back on terms. No doubt the Armagh fans went home
very disappointed with the performance of their team but Monaghan has been there
and done that - it is now Monaghan’s turn. Cavan or Fermanagh will not be easy but
it will be done.
