Emyvale Fun Run  Jan 1st 2010

What a way to begin the New Year - having a 10K and 6K Fun Run around the roads of Emyvale. Geraldine McAree had sleepless nights leading up to the event with the roads covered in ice and snow and sub-zero temperatures. It was her idea to organise the event and she had every eventuality covered but had no control over the weather. However God smiled on her and her Jolly Joggers and the sun shone down. Over 300 contestants signed up and Noel Kennedy put them under starters orders. It was a great sight as the runners and walkers headed off down the Main Street and up the Monaghan Road. They were young and not so young, boys and girls and from near and far. Belfast, England, Spain, the USA and many Counties in Ireland had representatives. The atmosphere was terrific and friendliness and good will was everywhere. A little over 34 minutes later the first 10K runner arrived back in the village having negotiated Carrigans, Stramore, Glennan Portinaghy, Pullis and Derrygasson. There was a constant steam of participants arriving back from the walk or the run, the 10K or the 6K and although it was tough they smiled. Marshals were out along the way, Garda assisted with traffic flow and the Red Cross were not needed thankfully but they were there. Refreshments were served in the Leisure Centre by a hard-working and happy lot and  everyone enjoyed the offerings of tea/coffee with scones, home-made wheaten and buns/cakes. Noel then announced the winners and Geraldine presented the prizes. The prizes went to: 10K Men - Caoimhin Kelly, Glaslough; Ryan Holt, Willowbank Belfast;and Paul McAnespie, Armagh. 10K Ladies - Nuala Reilly, Drogheda; Grainne McNally; and Denise Treanor, Truagh. 6K ladies - Alisha Boylan, Oriel; Natasha Boylan, Oriel; and Ciara McAnespie, Glaslough. 6K Men - Ryan McAnespie, Glaslough; Patrick O’Neill, Oriel; and Barry McElroy.

Proceeds of the day will go to the Cancer Treatment Support and that will make a big difference to many from the area.

A huge success was the verdict and congratulations to Geraldine and her Jolly Joggers on a great job so well executed and to the Glaslough Harriers who were all to the fore with their assistance, skills and expertise. Put New Year’s Day in your diary as it will happen again next year. You can go to our Podcasts on the HOME page and listen to Noel Kennedy sum up the event.
