The Emyvale Ladies played the first round of the senior championship for 2010 in
Emyvale on Thursday, July 22nd at 7.30pm. Their opponents were the girls from Donaghmoyne
and this was going to be a tough match, as Donaghmoyne has been the leading team
in the county for some time. However from the outset it was clear that Emyvale were
not going to take a defeat without a gallant battle and it has to be said that this
was the best game of football, men or ladies, that I have witnessed in 2010 so far.
It was so even throughout and the players on both sides gave 100% to gain the upper
hand. Indeed it could have been envisaged that Emyvale would throw in the towel,
as it were, if their opponents went into a lead. The score towards the interval was
showing in favour of the south Monaghan girls but in the second half Emyvale put
on a great show and gave it everything. They drew level and thenwent a point ahead
but deep into injury time the equaliser was scored and referee, Gerard Treanor, blew
leaving it a draw. The two sides must meet again, though this time in Donaghmoyne
but the local girls here know that they can defeat these champions and become the
new champions.
It was a sad occasion for the McAnespie girls and Brenda, as Lizzie
McAnespie was laid to rest on the day of the game and ‘a minutes silence’ was observed
prior to the throw-in as a mark of sympathy and respect.
