A new concept has been introduced by Monaghan County Board where a specific League game of the weekend will be labelled ‘Game of the Weekend’ and that particular game will receive major coverage in the media. It is hoped that during the year all clubs will be involved in at least one Game of the Weekend. The home club will help promote that game and use all methods to attract as big a crowd as possible to the game, thus promoting Gaelic Games and, hopefully, increasing the numbers through the turn-stiles.
The first ‘Game of the Weekend’ was on Sunday, March 27th in St. Mellans where Truagh will take on Scotstown in the Credit Union Senior League. This turned out an entertaining game for the big crowd present and it was obvious that the promotion done by the home team paid dividends through the turn-stiles. Truagh own 3 - 9 to 2- 6 though at one stage Scotstown scored a goal and levelled the sides. However within the minutes Mark Counihan returned the score by netting a great ball at the other end and from there Truagh were never going to lose the game. County Board officials, especially Michael Burns, will be happy with the outcome from the first of the Games of the Weekend and now it is up to the next appointed teams to make sure that big numbers attend their games. Prior to the big game both clubs played in the Platinum Tanks - Reserve Football League Div. 3 and the final score was: Truagh 3 - 8 v Scotstown 1 - 12. At half time of the senior game the U12s from the clubs played an exhibition game.
