During the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s there was a very strong Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoirí
in Monaghan Town but it went into decline due to lack of numbers. However in September
of this year 2010 a group of interested people got together to reform the Branch
and now, just three months later there are over 80 youth members and over 40 adult
members. The officers are: - Joe Ó Gallachóir (Chairperson); Eleanor Gilsenan (Vice-Chairperson);
Mary McCabe (Secretary); Marita Clerkin (Treasurer); Paul Cadden (PRO); Ann Marie
McCleary (Treoraí na nGaeilge); Joanna Boyle (Youth Officer) and Seamus Trappe (Auditor).
Tutors
in various disciplines are - Noreen Boyle, Damhnait McKenna; Mary McCabe and Niamh
NicAonghusa. They meet every Thursday night at 7pm in Coláiste Oiriall and new members
are always welcome.
The new Committee has close connections to those who were involved
in the 60’s and 70’s as Tommy Cadden was local chairperson and Vice-chairperson of
the Ulster committee. Angela Cadden, Tommy’s wife, was also involved in the Monaghan
Town committee. Now their daughter, Mary, and son, Paul, are active participants
in the running of the present Branch.
On Saturday evening, Dec 18th. all the musicians,
singers, dancers in the Monaghan Branch together with friends and family gathered
in the YMCA on North Road and provided a very enjoyable programme for all present.
The excellent talents displayed by the very young performers, as well as the more
experienced, augers well for the future of the branch and no doubt they will be taking
honours back to the town in the very near future. We wish them every success as they
maintain the beauty of our traditional music, song and dance.
