The Tydavnet Show will take place on Saturday, August 20th in the Show field, weather permitting, and it appears that once again it will prove to be bigger and better than previous years. The Schedule was launched at a function in Urbleshanny Hall on Tuesday, July 5th with guest speaker Sean Gallagher. This will be the 60th Tydavnet Show and will, therefore, be that bit more special.
Seamus Sherry retired as Chairman back in March at the AGM and Peggy Treanor took over this onerous task but seems to be coping in fine fashion. At the launch there was a presentation made to Seamus and his good wife Olive, who was also celebrating her birthday. This information was released for public consumption by Seamus, which for other couples might cause friction but for Olive - well she has lived with him long enough now to expect the unexpected. Peggy introduced the event expressing thanks to the sponsors, and all who have worked diligently to prepare for the Show. Representatives of the sponsors were present as were committee members and friends.
Gerard Sherlock, MC for the night, compared the early Shows to the present day and described the progression from small and parochial to huge and inclusive. He also conducted a Minute of Silence in memory of the great minds and hard workers who first planned the Show and those who continued the tradition but who have now passed to their eternal reward. He introduced the guest Sean Gallagher by giving a brief run down of his achievements to date, which was very impressive. Sean, who will be a candidate in the Autumn Presidential election was invited to this function before it was known that he intended to run for the office.
He certainly did his election hopes no harm with his presentation on the night. He struck the right chord with his audience and displayed a great knowledge of community, drawing on his early life experiences in Monaghan and Cavan, and had a visionary and realistic path for the future prosperity of Ireland and its people. I have published an edited audio of his presentation and we hope that you can access it by clicking on his photo below to get a sample of his ideas and approach to our economic problems. He paid a great compliment to the people of the area who have maintained and sustained the Tydavnet Show through thick and thin for the past 60 years and exhorted the people of the area never to lose the spirit of community and co-operation which has been so evident over the years.
There was a very tasty supper served with plenty of chat and friendship on display, with everyone looking forward to August 20th in the hope that plenty of people will enter the various competitions and with good weather the crowds will be there to support the 60th Show and make it one to remember with pride.
An art competition to design a front page for the Launch Booklet was very successful with overall winner - Eimear O’Leary, Killeevan(prize collected by her Teacher Edel Brady); 2nd Linda McMeel Edenmore and 3rd Rachel McKenna, Urbleshanny. Highly commended - Oisin Moore, Killeevan; Catriona Sherlock, Urbleshanny and Ciaran Burns, Killeevan
